Generator Installation & Service
In storm country a generator is only as useful as the transfer equipment connecting it, and that equipment is what keeps linemen alive.
Request Generator Installation & ServiceDuring a prolonged outage, the difference between a house that functions and one that does not is usually refrigeration, air conditioning, well water and medical equipment. A standby generator sized to those loads keeps a household habitable through a multi-day outage, which in this region is a realistic scenario rather than a remote one.
The critical component is not the generator itself but the transfer switch. It isolates your wiring from the utility grid before the generator energises, so power cannot back-feed down the line and injure someone working on it. Back-feeding through a dryer outlet or a double-male cord is genuinely lethal to utility crews, and it is illegal.
Standby versus portable
A standby generator is permanently installed, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts automatically within seconds of an outage. It costs more and requires a pad, fuel connection and permit. A portable generator costs far less but has to be set up manually, cannot be run indoors or in a garage because of carbon monoxide, and needs a proper connection point rather than an improvised one.
Sizing to what actually matters
Sizing is a load management question more than a total-capacity question. Very few households need the entire house to run at once. Prioritising the air conditioning, refrigeration, well pump or water heater, and a few circuits for lighting and outlets allows a smaller generator to do the job, and load management devices can shed the largest loads automatically while the generator is running.
Installation and ongoing service
A standby installation involves a concrete pad, a fuel connection, a transfer switch or service-rated transfer equipment, and permits and inspection. It also needs annual service: oil, filters, battery, and a run test under load. A generator that has not been exercised is a generator that may not start when it is finally needed, which is the worst possible time to discover it.
When to call
- You want backup power for storm season
- You have medical equipment that must keep running
- You are on a well and lose water during outages
- You want to connect a portable generator safely
- An existing generator needs annual service
- Your generator runs but does not carry the load
How the work is handled
- Assess the loads you need to keep running
- Size the generator and design the transfer arrangement
- Permit the installation and confirm fuel supply capacity
- Install the pad, unit, transfer switch and connections
- Commission, test under load and set a service schedule
What affects the cost
We do not quote a number before seeing the property, because the same job on two similar houses can need different work. These are the factors that move the scope:
- Generator capacity and whether it is standby or portable
- Transfer switch type and whether it is whole-house or circuit-level
- Fuel type, and whether the gas supply needs upgrading
- Pad, electrical work and any concrete or trenching required
- Permit and inspection requirements
- Ongoing annual service and fuel costs
Frequently asked questions
What size generator do I need?
It depends on which loads you want to keep running, not on the size of the house. Prioritising air conditioning, refrigeration, water and a few lighting circuits lets a much smaller unit do the job than trying to run everything at once.
Can I just plug a portable generator into an outlet?
No. That back-feeds power into the utility lines and puts anyone working on them at risk of electrocution. A proper connection requires a transfer switch or an interlock kit installed by an electrician, and the improvised approach is illegal as well as dangerous.
Does a standby generator need servicing?
Yes, annually at minimum. Oil, filters, battery and a run test under load. A generator that has sat unused for a year may not start when the outage arrives, which is precisely when you need it.
How long can a standby generator run during an outage?
As long as it has fuel. A natural gas connection has no practical limit during an outage. A propane tank lasts according to its size and the load, so if you are on propane it is worth sizing the tank to the outage length you want to cover.
