Whole Home Surge Protection

This part of Florida sees more lightning than almost anywhere in the country. Every strike nearby sends a surge through the grid and into your wiring.

Request Whole Home Surge Protection

A surge is a brief, large spike in voltage. Lightning is the obvious cause, but it is not the most frequent one: utility switching, downed lines, and the cycling of large equipment all produce surges, and they arrive far more often than storms do. Each one degrades electronics a little, which is why devices fail for no apparent reason after a few years.

Point-of-use power strips protect only what is plugged into them. A surge entering through the panel affects every circuit in the house, including the hardwired appliances that power strips cannot help: the air conditioner, the water heater, the oven and the garage door opener.

How panel-level protection works

A surge protective device installed at the service panel diverts excess voltage to ground before it travels through the branch circuits. It is a fast, high-capacity component that sacrifices itself rather than the equipment downstream. Because surges can also arrive through cable, telephone and data lines, protecting those entry points alongside the electrical supply is what closes the remaining paths.

What it does not do

A panel device is not a substitute for point-of-use protection on sensitive equipment. It reduces the surge reaching the branch circuits but does not eliminate it entirely, so a computer or home theatre benefits from a second layer at the outlet. It also cannot protect against a direct lightning strike to the structure, which is what a lightning protection system addresses instead.

Why this region specifically

Central Florida has among the highest lightning densities in the United States, and the storms are frequent and intense through the summer months. Grid exposure is correspondingly high. For a household with significant electronics, an EV charger, or a heat pump system with sensitive control boards, panel-level protection is one of the more cost-effective electrical additions available.

When to call

  • You have lost electronics or appliances to surges
  • You want protection for a heat pump or EV charger
  • Your panel has capacity for a surge device
  • You are already having electrical work done
  • You want coverage for hardwired appliances
  • You have a home office or significant electronics

How the work is handled

  • Inspect the panel and confirm capacity for a surge device
  • Select a device rated for the exposure and service type
  • Install at the panel and protect other entry points
  • Coordinate point-of-use protection for sensitive equipment
  • Verify installation and record the device for future checks

What affects the cost

We do not quote a number before seeing the property, because the same job on two similar houses can need different work. These are the factors that move the scope:

  • Panel capacity and whether a space is available
  • Rating and features of the surge device selected
  • Whether cable, telephone or data lines are also protected
  • Number of point-of-use devices needed at outlets
  • Panel age and condition, which may need attention first
  • Permit and inspection requirements where applicable

Frequently asked questions

Does a whole home surge protector stop lightning damage?

It substantially reduces surge damage from strikes nearby and from grid disturbances, and it protects hardwired appliances that power strips cannot. It cannot prevent damage from a direct strike to the structure, which is what a lightning protection system addresses.

Is a power strip enough?

No. A strip protects only what is plugged into it, and only if it is a genuine surge protective device rather than a basic power strip. Surges arriving through the panel reach every hardwired appliance in the house, none of which a strip can help.

Do surge protectors wear out?

Yes. A surge device diverts energy by sacrificing itself, and it degrades over its service life. Some units indicate when they have reached end of life. It is worth checking periodically and replacing when indicated, since a spent device provides no protection.

Will whole home surge protection lower my insurance?

Some insurers offer a discount for installed protective devices, and it varies by carrier and policy. It is worth asking, but the case for the device rests on equipment it protects rather than on any premium reduction.
